아프가니스탄의 하미드 카르자이 대통령은, 아편과 헤로인 교역의 번창이 민족 국가로서의 아프가니스탄의 존재를 위협하고 있다고 경고했습니다.
카르자이 대통령은 8일 에이피 통신과의 회견에서 마약을 테러리즘보다 더 큰 위협이라고 규정하고, 외국 범죄 단체들과 테러 분자들이 아프간 농민들에게 아편을 재배하도록 강요하고 있는가 하면, 이같은 마약들이 아프간 경제를 범죄화하고 국가의 이미지를 먹칠하고 있으며 강력한 정부 제도들의 발전을 가로막고있다고 지적하면서 이같이 경고했습니다.
이 회견에서 카르자이 대통령은 또한 탈레반 지도자, 물라 오마르에게 정부와 접촉해 화해를 모색하도록 초청했습니다. 그러나, 카르자이 대통령은 도망중인 오마르가 은신처에서 나오리라는 데에는 의문을 표명했습니다.
아프간 지도자는 또, 아프가니스탄 남부에서 치안을 맡고 있는 북대서양조약기구, 나토 주도의 평화 유지군이 정부의 허락없이 공격적인 전술을 동원해서는 안된다고 말했습니다.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai has warned a booming trade in opium and heroin threatens the existence of Afghanistan as a nation-state.
In an interview with the Associated Press (Sunday), the Afghan leader called drugs a bigger threat than terrorism. He said foreign crime groups and terrorists are forcing farmers to grow poppies. He said drugs are criminalizing the economy, tainting the country's image and hindering the development of strong government institutions.
During the interview, Mr. Karzai also invited Taleban leader Mullah Omar to contact his government and seek reconciliation. But he expressed doubts that the fugitive leader would come out of hiding.
The Afghan leader also said that NATO-led troops taking over security in southern part of the country must not use aggressive tactics without government permission.
