Iraqi police say an American journalist has been kidnapped and her translator killed in the capital, Baghdad.
Authorities say the journalist was on her way to a meeting with a Sunni Arab leader today (Saturday) when her car was stopped by gunmen in the Adel district of west Baghdad.
There has been a spate of kidnappings of Westerners in Iraq over the past few months. Four Christian peace activists -- a Briton, an American, a Frenchman and two Canadians are still being held captive.
Separately, the commander of the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq said Friday foreign insurgents and their Iraqi supporters are trying to start a civil war, but that he does not believe they will succeed.
