중국의 이른바 `4인방' 가운데 마지막 생존자였던 야오원위안씨가 74살의 나이로 사망했습니다. 중국 관영 신화통신은 야오씨가 지난 12월 23일 당뇨병으로 사망했다고 전했지만 사망 보도가 왜 뒤늦게 나왔는지에 대해서는 설명하지 않았습니다.
중국의 4인방은 마오쩌둥 통치기간 중이던 1966년 시작된 10년에 걸친 중국 문화혁명에서 핵심 인물로 이 혁명은 공산당 내에서 지식인의 영향을 정화할 목적으로 진행됐습니다.
이 기간 중 수백만명이 체포되고 수만명이 처형됐으며 4인방은 마오쩌둥 사망 직후인 1976년 말 체포됐습니다.

The final surviving member of China's so-called "Gang of Four," Yao Wenyuan, has died at the age of 74.
China's official Xinhua news agency says Mr. Yao died of diabetes on December 23rd. There was no explanation for the delay in reporting his death.
The Gang of Four members were central figures in China's 10-year Cultural Revolution, an attempt to purify the Communist Party of the influence of intellectuals. It began in 1966 during the last years of Mao Zedong's rule.
Millions of people were arrested during that period. Tens of thousands were executed. The members of the Gang of Four were arrested in late 1976, shortly after Mao's death.
