A Russian rocket has lifted the first of a planned 30 Galileo satellites into orbit -- the first major step in a European Union project aimed at creating a new global navigational system.
Today's (Wednesday's) launch at Russia's (Baikonur) space center in Kazakhstan went off smoothly.
Europe's multibillion-dollar Galileo program, a public-private partnership that includes China and five other non-European nations, is intended to rival the United States' Global Positioning System. GPS networks use (triangulated) satellite radio signals as navigation aids, allowing users on Earth to measure distances and positions with great precision.
