The Council on American-Islamic Relations has expressed concern about a news report the U.S. government has run a top-secret program to monitor radiation levels at more than 100 Muslim sites.
In a statement released Friday, the Islamic advocacy group said the secret eavesdropping could lead to a perception the nation is not ruled by law, but one where fear takes priority over constitutional rights.
The group was responding to a report in U.S. News and World Report that U.S. officials have been secretly monitoring radiation levels at Muslim sites, including mosques and private homes. The news magazine says at its peak, investigators in three vehicles monitored 120 sites per day in Washington, nearly all of them Muslim targets drawn up by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). It says the program also operated in five other cities (Chicago, Detroit, Las Vegas, New York and Seattle), and was done without a court order.
