미국 국회가 오는 31일로 만료되는 애국법의 시효를 5주간 연장하는 안을 조지 부쉬 대통령에게 송부함으로써 애국법을 둘러싸고 여러 날째 계속됐던 치열한 정치적 공방이 일단락 되었습니다.
상원은 하원에서 이와 유사한 연장안이 통과된 직후인 22일 늦게 이 안을 승인했습니다. 앞서 하원은 애국법6개월 연장안을 거부했었습니다
이 같은 애국법 시효 연장은 이 법의 말썽 많은 민권관련 조항들이 좀더 논의될수 있도록 의원들에게 더 많은 시간을 주기 위한 것입니다. 미국 애국법은 테러 용의자들을 추적하기 위한 연방 정부의 광범위한 권한을 허용하고 있습니다.

The U.S. Congress has sent President Bush legislation to extend the Patriot Act by five weeks, ending days of intense political debate over the nation's primary anti-terrorism law.
The Senate approved the five-week extension late Thursday, shortly after the House of Representatives passed a similar extension.
Earlier, the House had rejected a six-month extension approved by the Senate on Wednesday.
Congressman James Sensenbrenner (of Wisconsin), the Republican chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, led efforts to strike down the six-month extension. He said the shorter extension would force the Senate to act faster to renew the Patriot Act, which would have expired at the end of this month.
