The trial of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein has adjourned until Thursday, after a day during which Saddam said he has been tortured while in American custody.
Saddam told the court today (Wednesday) that Americans beat him on every part of his body and that he has the marks to prove it.
In Washington, a State Department spokesman (Sean McCormack) said he knows of no evidence to substantiate the former Iraqi dictator's allegation. He called Saddam's claim of torture highly ironic, noting he is on trial on charges of ordering the 1982 torture and massacre of 140 Shi'ite Muslims in Iraq.
Witnesses Wednesday told the court about seeing guards torture people arrested in Dujail after a failed assassination attempt on Saddam there. They said guards dripped melted plastic on detainees, peeled off their skin and administered electric shocks.
