The Iraqi Election Commission says preliminary results show about 70 percent turnout in the country's December 15th parliamentary elections. The commission announced the figure today (Wednesday) as vote counting continued.
Final results are expected in January. Preliminary partial results show a strong lead for a Shi'ite coalition, prompting calls of fraud from Iraq's main Sunni Arab coalition, the Iraqi Consensus Front. The Sunni coalition warned it may call for a re-vote.
Meanwhile, the U.S. military says at least nine insurgents were killed and 16 captured during two incidents Monday and Tuesday.
