New York City's subway and bus workers are on strike. The transit workers' union declared it was on strike this (Tuesday) morning, hours after its original deadline for a walkout (at midnight, local time / 0500 UTC), when contract talks collapsed (between the transit workers' union and the state-run Metropolitan Transportation Authority).
The city is making an emergency legal appeal to have the strike declared illegal, but for the time being Mayor Michael Bloomberg is urging New Yorkers to get ready to walk to work. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg says a strike by the city's transit union is "morally reprehensible."
The walkout will shutdown the city's huge bus and subway network, and throw the daily commute of its seven million customers into chaos. Mr. Bloomberg says he will ask a judge to take legal action against the union.
The city and the union are deadlocked in negotiations for a new contract -- primarily over wages and a proposed new pension plan that would reduce retirement benefits for transit workers hired in the future. New York City has not been hit by a strike in 25 years.
The walkout by the union's 34-thousand members will shut down the city's huge bus and subway network, snarling the daily trip to work for up to seven million residents (of the city and nearby areas). Estimates are that a strike could cost New York as much as 400 million dollars a day.
