Japanese defense ministry officials say the country plans to pay about one-third of the cost of developing a naval missile defense system with the United States.
A Defense Agency spokeswoman said today (Thursday) the government estimates its cost for the project will be just above one billion dollars.
Japanese media reports have described the project as a larger, upgraded version of the system currently deployed on U.S. and Japanese destroyers to defend against ballistic missiles. Completing the project could take more than a decade.
Japan has wanted to build a missile defense system with the United States since 1998 when North Korea fired a missile over the Japanese mainland into the Pacific Ocean.
