China says deaths caused by coal-mine accidents continued to rise this year, despite government efforts to crack down on rampant safety violations.

The state-run China Daily says today (Tuesday) that almost five-and-one-half-thousand miners have already died in accidents this year -- over 200 more lives than were lost in all of 2004.

The newspaper reports that government officials responsible for workplace safety are promising an "iron-handed" review of the mining industry. This is expected to result in closure of at least four-thousand substandard mines this month alone, and a curb on exaggerated production quotas that often cause accidents.
