죠지 부쉬 미국 대통령은 미군이 이라크를 침공해 독재자 사담 후세인을 축출한 이래 이라크인 사망자수가 약 3만 명에 달하는 것으로 본다고 말했습니다.
부쉬 대통령은 12일, 최근 몇 주일 사이 이라크에 관한 세 번째 연설을 마친뒤 기자의 질문에 이같이 답변했습니다. 부쉬 대통령은 이라크인 사망자수에는 미군의 침공때와 현재까지 계속되는 저항분자의 폭력사태 기간 사망자수가 포함돼 있다고 설명했습니다.
미군 당국은 미국인 이외의 사상자수를 밝히기를 꺼려해 왔습니다. 부쉬 대통령은 이날 필라델피아 연설에서 이라크의 민주주의 진전을 치하하고 2005년은 이라크와 중동지역에게 전환점으로 기억될 것이라고 말했습니다.
부쉬 대통령은 또 미국과 연합국이 이라크에서 확고하게 머물러 있는 한 이라크에서 내전이 임박할 것이라는 우려는 근거없는 것이라고 말했습니다.
부쉬 대통령은 그밖에 이라크 국민들의 대다수가 이란식 신정체제를 원하지 않는다고 말했습니다. 부쉬 대통령은 이란과 시리아에 의한 부정적인 영향을 막기 위해 미국은 이라크편에 있을 것이라고 강조하면서 이같이 말했습니다.

President Bush says he believes about 30-thousand Iraqis have been killed since U.S. forces invaded the country to remove Saddam Hussein from power.
Mr. Bush gave the estimate in response to a question following his third speech in recent weeks on Iraq, delivered today (Monday) in Philadelphia.
The president said that number includes Iraqis killed during the invasion and ongoing insurgent violence.
The U.S. military has previously been reluctant to provide non-U.S. casualty figures for the conflict.
During the speech, President Bush hailed democratic progress in Iraq, saying 2005 will be remembered as a 'turning point' for the country and for the Middle East. He said fears of an imminent civil war in Iraq are unwarranted as long as the United States and other allies remain steadfast.
President Bush noted that Iraqis will vote Thursday for the third time this year. He called this a remarkable achievement in the face of determined enemies.
