Reports from southern China's Guangdong province say Chinese police or soldiers have opened fire on a large group of protesters, killing at least two people.
The Reuters news agency and the French Press Agency quote several residents of Dongzhou village as saying the shootings happened Tuesday evening after security personnel came in to stop a civilian protest.
Witnesses are quoted as saying at least one-thousand people were demonstrating against inadequate compensation for land taken from them for the construction of a power plant.
