Russian officials have confirm the signing of a new arms sales agreement with Iran, but they insist it involves only defensive weapons. A Foreign Ministry spokesman (Mikhail Kamynin) gave no specifics of the accord, but he said all contracts fully comply with Russia's international commitments, including those involving non-proliferation.
Russian news media reports Friday said the deal involves one billion dollars worth of arms and other military equipment to cover the modernization of Iran's air force. The reports said the arms will include about 30 Tor-M1 surface-to-air missile systems, which are designed for defense against low altitude aircraft and missiles. The deal is also to cover delivery of some patrol boats to Iran.
Russia has resisted western efforts to bring the issue of Iran's suspected nuclear weapons program before the United Nations Security Council. Moscow also is building a nuclear reactor near the Iranian city of Bushehr.
