Britain has announced it will double spending on stem cell research over the next two years. British officials say they will invest an additional 86-million dollars on the science that many medical experts believe could lead to effective treatment of crippling diseases and major spinal injuries.
Treasury chief Gordon Brown said in remarks prepared for a speech Friday that Britain should be the world's leading center for stem cell research. Stem cells are the body's master cells from which all other cells and tissues develop. They first appear in human embryos just days old. Abortion opponents object to taking the cells from human embryos.
Scientists hope to eventually find ways to use these cells to treat diseases such as Alzheimer's and re-grow damaged spinal cord cells.
