President Bush has repeated a call to strengthen U.S. immigration policies -- and to give out more temporary worker visas to illegal immigrants.
Speaking to reporters today (Tuesday) at a border patrol facility in (the southwestern state of) Texas, Mr. Bush said the nation needs a temporary worker plan that does not provide amnesty to illegal immigrants. He said such a plan would allow foreigners to do jobs Americans will not do.
The president has called on Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform legislation. But lawmakers are divided on Mr. Bush's temporary worker visa plan.
Supporters of the proposal say it will create incentives for lawful immigration and boost the economy. Critics of the program -- some of whom are in Mr. Bush's own Republican party -- say it is a form of amnesty for people who enter the country illegally.
