A huge river-borne slick of highly toxic benzene has reached Harbin, one of northeastern China's largest cities, which has closed its water mains to prevent mass contamination by the cancer-causing chemical.

Chinese authorities say the leading edge of an 80-kilometer-long pool of benzene reached Harbin's municipal water inlets on the Songhua River early today (Thursday).

The polluted water (which stems from a chemical-plant explosion upstream on November 13) is moving slowly, since the river is partly frozen. (Harbin, a city of four million, is known as one of China's coldest places, and) Experts say it will be sometime Saturday before the river flows clean again.

Authorities in Harbin warned residents to avoid benzene fumes rising from the river. Scientists say even small amounts of the industrial solvent can cause mouth ulcers; larger quantities cause leukemia.

Chinese media quoted an environmental expert (Zhang Lanying, director of the Environment and Resources Institute of Jilin University) who said closing Harbin's water mains was a prudent measure. "If contaminated water had been supplied to households," the scientist said, "the result would have been unimaginable."
