Vietnam's Roman Catholic Church plans to ordain 57 new priests next week during a visit to Hanoi by a senior Vatican envoy. Church officials say the mass ordination ceremony is an indication that relations continue to improve between the Vietnamese government and Catholic leaders, both in Hanoi and Rome.
Church officials in Hanoi say the new priests, from a wide area of northern Vietnam, will be ordained (on November 29) at a cathedral (St. Joseph's) in the capital, with the Vatican envoy (Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe, prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples) presiding. Communist Vietnam has no diplomatic ties with the Vatican, and government officials are not expected to attend the ceremony.
However, church spokesmen say the ordination is unprecedented in size. With at least six million faithful, Vietnam is the second-largest Catholic community in Asia (after the Philippines).
