11일 바레인 방문으로 중동 순방을 시작한 라이스 국무 장관은 같은 날 이라크 북부 도시 모술에 도착해, 현지 이라크 관리들과 미국 외교관들 그리고 군 장교들을 만났습니다. 라이스 장관은 이어 바그다드에서 이라크 정부 관리들을 만났습니다.
라이스 국무 장관은 기자들에게 자신은 이라크의 회교 수니파와 시아파, 쿠르드족에게 12월 15일의 국회 의원 선거를 앞두고 어떠한 분열상도 극복하도록 촉구하길 원했다고 밝혔습니다.

U.S. Secretary of State State Condoleezza Rice is on a surprise visit to Iraq, where she is urging Iraqis to reduce sectarian tensions before elections next month.
Ms. Rice arrived in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul today (Friday) from Bahrain, where she started a tour of the Middle East earlier Friday. She met with local Iraqi officials and U.S. diplomats and military officers. She later met with officials in Baghdad.
Ms. Rice told reporters she wanted to urge Iraq's Sunnis, Shi'ites and Kurds to overcome any divisions ahead of the December 15th parliamentary elections. She said the goal in Iraq is a nation where all people feel fully protected.
Meanwhile, the U.S. military says two American soldiers were killed Thursday while conducting combat operations near al-Khalidiyah, 120 kilometers west of Baghdad. The military also says a U.S. Marine was killed by a roadside bomb in Karabilah, 320 kilometers west of the capital.
