Democrats have won the races for governor in the eastern U.S. states of Virginia and New Jersey, while New York City's Republican mayor has easily won re-election.
In Virginia, Democratic Lieutenant Governor Tim Kaine claimed victory over Republican former attorney general Jerry Kilgore. President Bush made a last-minute campaign appearance for Mr. Kilgore, but it did not help him win. Meanwhile, Democratic U.S. Senator Jon Corzine easily defeated Republican businessman Douglas Forrester in New Jersey.
Across the country, there are 28 Republican governors and 22 Democratic governors. Political observers were looking at those races as a possible indicator of Mr. Bush's standing among voters, especially as the two main parties begin preparing for next year's congressional races. The president's nationwide approval ratings have dropped sharply in recent months to the lowest of his presidency.
