INTRODUCTION:
After the terrorist attacks in the United States on September 11, 2001. American students became more interested in studying abroad. There's even one college in the mid-Atlantic state of Maryland that now requires students to study abroad in order to get a diploma. VOA's Carol Pearson reports.

The year following the terrorist attacks on U-S soil, the number of American college students in a study abroad program increased by 8 and a half percent. The number of Americans studying at foreign colleges and universities has shot up by 145%, from 71 thousand in 1991, to more than 174 thousand in 2004. Bianca Merbaum is one of those students.

Bianca is a student at Goucher College, ("Gouch" as in "ouch") a small liberal arts college near Baltimore, Maryland, where an econometrics class can have as few as five students. Beginning next year, the freshman class will have to study abroad in order to graduate. Goucher College is the first accredited four-year college to have such a requirement. College President Sanford Ungar says he wants the students to understand there are many ways to solve problems.

Mr. Ungar says even a three and a half week course, the minimum requirement, can be a life-changing experience.

"If you've never been abroad before, and you go abroad for a minimum of three and a half weeks, it's amazing sometimes the awakening that occurs, the realization about things. And it doesn't provide answers, it raises
questions, and that's what we think is an important thing to do as part of a liberal arts education."

Mr. Ungar says letters and e-mails from alumni has been overwhelmingly positive and that he and the board of directors at Goucher College are satisfied that the graduates of this small college will be better prepared to work in an international environment.

매튜 사빈이란 이름의 이 학생은 해외 연수가 국제 사회를 이해하는데 매우 중요하다고 생각한다며 지구촌 사람들에 대한 감사 없이 미국은 단절되고 폐쇄적인 사회가 될 수 밖에 없으며 국제적 왕따가 될 수 있다고 말했습니다.
문: 현재 해외 유학중인 미국 학생들은 몇 명이나 됩니까?
답: 지난 2004년 한 해동안 174,000 명의 미국 대학생들이 해외에서 단기 연수 또는 장기 유학을 하고 있는 것으로 나타났습니다. 지난 1991년에는 71,000 명에 불과했었는데요.
