Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro says he would like to meet with top Chinese officials, despite recent tension over his visit to a controversial shrine.
Speaking today (Tuesday) in Tokyo, Mr. Koizumi said he wants to hold bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit next month in South Korea. Japan's Kyodo News agency quotes Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Wu Dawei as saying bilateral talks during the summit would be "very difficult."
Early last week, China and South Korea canceled meetings with top Japanese officials to protest Mr. Koizumi's visit to the Yasukuni Shrine. The shrine honors Japanese war dead, including convicted war criminals. Critics say Yasukuni represents Japan's past military aggression, but Mr. Koizumi says his visits are to pray for peace.
