부시 대통령은 20일 팔레스타인인들은 독립국가 창설이라는 그들의 목표에 조금 더 가까워졌다고 말하고 그러나 중동의 평화절차를 진전시키기 위해서는 추가적인 조처들이 필요하다고 강조했습니다.
부시 대통령은 이날 백악관에서 마무드 아바스 팔레스타인 대통령과 만난 뒤 가진 기자회견에서 이같이 말했습니다.
두 지도자는 최근 이스라엘이 가자지구에서 철수한 것은 기회라고 말하고 아울러 곧 실시될 팔레스타인 의회선거는 민주주의를 위한 진전이라고 환영했습니다.
부시 대통령은 중동평화를 위한 다음 조처는 선거와 이스라엘과 팔레스타인 간의 지속적인 평화 전망을 위협하는 무장집단에 대처하는 것이라고 말했습니다.

President Bush says Palestinians have moved closer to achieving their dream of an independent state, but more steps are needed to keep the Mideast peace process moving forward.
Mr. Bush and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas spoke to reporters today (Thursday) after what Mr. Bush called "good talks" at the White House.
Both leaders described Israel's recent withdrawal from the Gaza Strip as an opportunity, and hailed the coming Palestinian parliamentary elections as a step forward for democracy.
Mr. Bush said the next step was to confront what he called "armed gangs" he said threaten the elections and the prospects for lasting Israeli-Palestinian peace.
He also said Israel must stop settlement activity in the West Bank, and said it is important that the sides make progress on opening crossings to Gaza.
Mr. Abbas said Palestinians are committed to reaching a negotiated settlement with Israel, but he said the time has come to move quickly toward permanent status talks.
This is the first time Mr. Bush and Mr. Abbas have met since Israel ended its 38-year occupation of Gaza last month.
