Two scientific teams in the United States say they have each developed potential methods of generating embryonic stem cells without harming a healthy embryo.
One team of researchers extracted stem cells from mouse embryos that had been genetically altered to prevent them from growing a placenta, which allows a fetus to develop in the womb.
A second group of scientists developed a line of embryonic stem cells by removing a single cell from a developing mouse embryo. Researchers say the two methods could provide an alternative to destroying human embryos to extract human embryonic stem cells, a practice which opponents say kills a potential human being.
President Bush banned government funding of new human embryonic stem cell lines in 2001. Many scientists say use of human embryonic stem cells could lead to cures for such illnesses as cancer and Alzheimer's disease.
