South Africa's environment minister has called on the United States and other nations to sign the Kyoto Protocol on cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

Marthinus van Schalkwyk told a conference on global warming in Johannesburg there is compelling evidence that human activity has accelerated climate change. He pointed to hurricane Katrina, the storm that devastated the southern coast of the United States, as evidence of global climate change.

South Africa has signed the Kyoto Protocol under which industrialized nations have committed themselves to cutting their emissions of carbon dioxide and five other greenhouse gases.

The United States government has rejected it because developing nations would be exempt from Kyoto carbon dioxide emission restrictions.

Mr. van Schalkwyk also called for increased focus on how climate change is affecting Africa.

He warned that small scale farmers in developing countries would be hardest hit by the effects of global warming, forcing many to switch crops and livestock.
