South Korea's top prosecutor has quit in protest after the justice ministry stopped his attempt to detain a professor for alleged pro-North Korean remarks.
Government officials said today (Sunday) that South Korea's president has accepted the resignation of the prosecutor general (Kim Jong-bin).
Media reports said the issue arose last week in response to a sociology professor's remarks.
The teacher allegedly described the Korean War as a civil conflict for reunification. He also said the U.S. military presence in South Korea is a stumbling block to reunification.
Prosecutors and police wanted to arrest the professor last week on charges of violating the national security law -- which bans pro-North Korean remarks and activities.
However, South Korea's justice minister refused to issue a detaining order, citing human rights and freedom of thought.
