파키스탄 정부 관리들은 현재 지진피해 지역에 약 5만명의 병력이 배치돼 생존자들을 돕고 있다고 말했습니다.
페르베스 무샤라프 파키스탄 대통령은 대국민 연설을 통해 지원이 늦어진데 대해 유감의 뜻을 밝히면서 이번 참사는 너무 규모가 커 정부가 신속히 대응하는데 어려움이 있다고 말했습니다.
피해가 가장 큰 지역은 카쉬미르로 이 곳에서는 인도군 병사들이 수십년 간의 분쟁상태를 뒤로 한 채 국경을 넘어 와 막사붕괴로 도움을 요청한 파키스탄 병사들을 지원했습니다.
인도의 카쉬미르에서는 사망자 수가 1천4백명으로 늘어났다고 인도 관리들이 말했습니다. 현지의 한 고위 관리는 진앙에서 가까운 국경마을 두 곳에서만 4만채 이상의 가옥이 파괴됐다고 말했습니다.

President Pervez Musharraf addressed the nation and expressed regret about delays in helping people. He said the tragedy was too huge for his government to handle quickly.
The worst-hit region is Kashmir, where Indian soldiers put aside their decades old rivalry Wednesday and crossed the de facto border to help Pakistani troops who called for help when their bunkers collapsed.
In Indian Kashmir, officials say the death toll has risen above 14-hundred. A top regional official says more than 40-thousand homes were destroyed in two frontier districts close to the epicenter of the quake.
