U.S. weather forecasters say Hurricane Rita is expected to hit the upper Texas and southwestern Louisiana coastline late today (Friday).
The National Hurricane Center says the extremely dangerous storm is packing sustained winds near 225 kilometers per hour, with hurricane force winds extending 137 kilometers from the center.
A hurricane advisory says "preparations to protect life and property should be rushed to completion."
President Bush will visit Texas today for a first-hand look at preparations for the storm.
Coastal storm surge flooding up to six meters above normal tide levels is predicted where the center of Hurricane Rita makes landfall along the Gulf of Mexico coastline.
Officials in Texas say hundreds of thousands of residents fleeing coastal areas have caused massive traffic jams and gasoline shortages along evacuation routes, especially out of Houston -- the country's fourth largest city.
A tropical storm warning is in effect for New Orleans and surrounding areas, which are still trying to recover from Hurricane Katrina.
