Agricultural issues have dominated talks in Paris today (Friday) between trade officials from Europe, the United States, India and Brazil.
Representatives say the discussions resulted in a better understanding of the various positions, but differences remain regarding how to cut tariffs and farming subsidies.
Poorer nations have called on the more developed countries to decrease their subsidies to farmers, saying they hurt producers in less developed nations and lower world prices.
The negotiators are optimistic a consensus will be reached before delegates of the 148 member nations of the World Trade Organization meet in Hong Kong later this year. The members expect to agree on portions of a global trade treaty that will be part of a finalized deal they hope to complete by next year.
