Millions of Afghans voted Sunday to elect a legislature for the first time in more than three decades.
Election officials said voting was mostly peaceful, despite scattered attacks that claimed the lives of ten people, one of them a French soldier.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai praised voters for braving threats of violence, and called the election a defeat for terrorism.
Organizers said they believe turnout was high, just slightly lower than in last October's presidential election. They said they would not have any figures before Monday and that it would take at least two weeks to count the millions of multi-page ballots.
Nearly six-thousand candidates were competing for the 249 seats in the lower house of the national assembly, and for 34 provincial councils.
