조지 부시 미국 대통령과 자랄 탈라바니 이라크 대통령은 이라크 문제를 비롯한 국제 현안에 관한 유엔 연설을 준비중인 가운데 유엔 총회 개막 전날인 13일 이곳 백악관에서 회동합니다.
두 정상은 이라크 헌법 초안및 다음달 있을 국민투표에서 헌법초안에 관한 수니파들의 지지를 끌어내기 위한 노력등에 관해 논의할 것으로 보인다고 관리들은 말하고 있습니다.
앞서 탈라바니 대통령은 미국의 워싱톤 포스트 신문과의 회견에서, 이라크 일부지역에 치안을 담당할 수 있는 충분한 병력이 있기 때문에 미국은 올해말까지 오만명의 군 병력을 철수할 수 있을 것이라고 말했습니다.
그러나 탈라바니 대통령의 보좌관은 그후, 워싱턴 포스트신문에 전화를 걸어, 탈라바니 대통령이 구체적인 철수 일정표를 제시하려 하지 않았음을 분명히 해줄 것을 요구했습니다.

President Bush meets at the White House with Iraqi President Jalal Talabani today (Tuesday) as both leaders prepare to address the United Nations on Iraq's future and other issues.

The talks come on the eve of the opening of the U.N. General Assembly meeting in New York.
Officials say the two men are likely to discuss Iraq's draft constitution and efforts to get Iraq's Sunni Arabs to support the document in a national referendum set for next month.
Earlier, Mr. Talabani told the Washington Post that the United States could withdraw up to 50-thousand troops from Iraq by the end of the year, because there were enough trained Iraqi forces ready to begin taking control of parts of the country.
But an advisor to Mr. Talabani later called the newspaper to clarify that the Iraqi leader was not suggesting a specific timetable for withdrawal.
