영국은 유럽연합이 예정대로 다음 달에 터키와의 회원 가입 협상을 시작할 것을 촉구했습니다.
유럽연합 순번제 의장직을 맡고 있는 영국의 잭 스트로 외무장관은 만일 터키와의 가입협상에 나서지 않을 경우 유럽연합은 위기에 직면할 수 있다고 말했습니다.
스트로 장관은 협상을 거부한다면 유럽연합의 신뢰도가 떨어지는 것은 물론 터키가 최근 시행하고 있는 중요한 개혁 조처들을 위태롭게 할 수 있다고 지적했습니다.
이에 앞서 압둘라 굴 터키 외무장관은 유럽연합이 만일 터키의 가입과 관련해 새로운 조건을 내세우거나 정회원 자격 이외의 지위를 부여하려 할 경우 회원국이 되려는 시도를 포기하겠다고 말했습니다.

Britain has urged the European Union to open membership talks with Turkey next month as scheduled, despite Ankara's failure to recognize the internationally-backed Greek-led Cyprus government.
British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, whose country holds the rotating EU presidency, said (in London) the bloc may experience a crisis if it fails to pursue negotiations with Ankara. He said dismissing the talks would compromise EU credibility and could also endanger the significant reform Turkey has recently implemented.
Last week, Turkey's Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul warned his country will abandon its EU membership bid if the bloc imposes new conditions on Ankara, or tries to offer anything less than full membership.
Turkey has insisted that recognition of the Cyprus government depends on a resolution of the three-decade division between the island's Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities.
The union has been pressing Turkey to normalize relations with all EU members, including Cyprus.
