석유 부유국 쿠웨이트는 4일 우방국에 대한 의무라고 밝히면서 미국에 5억 달러의 석유제품과 다른 인도적 지원을 제공할 것이라고 말했습니다. 미국 주도 연합군은 1991년 걸프만 전쟁에서 이라크 점령 하에 있던 쿠웨이트를 해방시켰습니다. 또다른 중동 국가 카타르도 1억달러의 지원을 제의했습니다.
한편 유럽 연합은 미국 관계관들이 담요와 비상 약품, 식수 전달용 트럭과 식품과 같은 물자 지원을 요청했다고 밝혔습니다.

A senior U.S. official says it is evident thousands of people have died in the areas struck by Hurricane Katrina.
Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt made the remark during a CNN television interview today (Sunday). He is the first Bush administration official to acknowledge the death toll from Katrina might be that high.
In New Orleans, rescue teams are working to evacuate the remaining storm survivors before starting the gruesome task of collecting the dead.
Officials say 42-thousand people were evacuated on Saturday, including everyone who had gathered at the city's football stadium and convention center.
But thousands of people remain trapped in buildings surrounded by floodwaters, six days after Katrina hit. Meanwhile, corpses have been sighted on porches, sidewalks and flooded streets, sparking fears of disease.
Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff says the nation must prepare for what he called "ugly pictures" as bodies are found.
In Washington, President Bush stopped by an American Red Cross operations center ahead of a second trip to the hurricane region early this week. The president, who has been bitterly criticized as responding too slowly to the disaster, said victims can expect a "tidal wave of compassion" in coming days.
Meanwhile, Countries around the globe continue to offer the United States money and assistance to help deal with the effects of Hurricane Katrina.
Today (Sunday), the oil-rich nation of Kuwait said it will donate 500-million dollars in oil products and other humanitarian aid.
Kuwait's energy minister (Sheikh Ahmad al-Fahd al-Sabah) described the gesture as a duty toward a friend. A US-led coalition liberated Kuwait from Iraqi occupation in the 1991 Persian Gulf War.
Another Gulf Arab state, Qatar, has offered 100-million dollars in assistance.
Meanwhile, the European Union says U.S. officials have requested supplies such as blankets, first aid kits, water trucks and food.
More than 50 nations have offered humanitarian aid since Katrina struck the U.S. Gulf of Mexico coast last Monday, including countries still struggling with the aftermath of last year's Asian tsunami.
