Two British scientists say mad cow disease in European cattle may have originated in cows that were given feed contaminated with human remains.

The controversial theory by Alan and Nancy Colchester appears in the latest edition of the British medical journal, Lancet. The Colchesters are experts in health and veterinary science.

They contend that the infected feed came from India from the 1950s through the 1970s. Their theory says partially burned remains of people who had a human form of the disease were tossed into the Ganges Rover as

part of a Hindu ritual. They say locals then sold the body parts to processors who used them in fertilizer and animal feed.

Indian scientists say the theory is not proven, and needs more investigation.

Mad cow disease was first diagnosed in infected animals in Britain in 1986. It can be spread to humans by eating infected meat. The disease is almost always fatal.
