뉴올리언즈 시 당국은 주민들에게 고지대로 즉각 대피하거나 시를 떠날 것을 강력히 권고하고 있습니다. 한편 조지 부시 대통령은 루지아내주를 연방 긴급 재난 지역으로 선포했습니다.

People have begun to evacuate the southern U.S. city of New Orleans as Hurricane Katrina closes in, packing winds of 250 kilometers per hour.
Today (Sunday), the U.S. National Weather Service upgraded Katrina to a rare Category 5 storm, the most intense on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale.
Officials have expressed special concern about New Orleans, which sits nearly two meters below sea level, making it vulnerable to flooding.
The weather service says Katrina may dump 25 centimeters of rain in some areas and cause a storm surge of more than seven meters above normal tide levels.
New Orleans city officials have strongly urged residents to leave the city or move to higher elevations immediately.
President Bush has already declared a federal state of emergency for the state of Louisiana.
