러시아 정부가 러시아 내 감옥에 만연해 있는 수감자에 대한 학대와 고문을 외면하고 있다고 러시아의 한 주요 인권단체가 25일 밝혔습니다.
러시아인권운동의 책임자인 레프 포노마르요프씨는 이날 러시아 내 감옥들은 현재 옛 소련의 강제수용소와 다를 것이 없다면서, 간수들은 조직적으로 수감자들을 모욕하면서 이들을 정신적으로나 육체적으로 파괴하고 있다고 주장했습니다.
이 단체는 이날 발표한 보고서에서 이같은 잔혹한 처우 때문에 지난해에 수감자들이 수 건의 폭동을 일으켰다고 밝혔습니다.

A leading Russian human rights group has accused the government of ignoring what it calls rampant abuse and torture in Russian prisons.
The executive director of Russia's Movement for Human Rights, Lev Ponomaryov, today (Thursday) said prisons in his country are as bad as those of the old Soviet Gulag. He said the policy of prison officials is to systematically humiliate convicts, "morally and often physically destroying them."
In its annual report released today (Thursday), the rights group said the cruel treatment has prompted several revolts by inmates in the past year.
Leaders of the group called on Russian authorities to dismiss the country's top prison official, Yuri Kalinin, and enact legislation allowing oversight of detention facilities.
