In Iraq, Monday's deadline for a draft of the country's permanent constitution is approaching, with conflicting reports on whether political leaders are any closer to agreeing on its content.
Iraqi negotiators working on the constitution say the United States has now dropped its objections to Shi'ite demands that Islam be Iraq's only source of legislation, rather than just one source. But Kurdish officials say they remain resolute that Islam should not become the country's main source of laws.
Meanwhile, hundreds of Sunni Arabs in Ramadi and Kirkuk demonstrated against the possibility of a federal Iraq, saying they want a unified country. The constitution must win broad support in the country's 18 provinces in an October referendum to be adopted.
The constitution will fail if two-thirds of voters in at least three provinces reject it.
