남한은 북한의 기근을 해소하기 위한 협력사업의 하나로 내년에 북한에 영농지원을 제공하기로 합의했습니다. 이 합의는 19일 북한 개성에서 폐막된 이틀 간의 농업협력위원회 1차 회의에서 이뤄진 것입니다. 남북한 간에 농업분야 회의가 개최된 것은 이번이 처음입니다.
이번 합의에 따라 남한은 북한에 비료, 살충제 그리고 농기계 등을 제공하게 됩니다. 북한의 2,300만 주민들의 식량을 공급하지 못하고 있는 북한의 사회주의협동농장들은 남한의 지원으로 현대화를 시작하게 됐습니다.
남한은 최근 수 년 동안 북한에 수십 만 톤의 식량과 비료를 제공해오고 있습니다.

South Korea has agreed to provide agricultural assistance to North Korea next year in a joint-venture aimed at ending the North's famine. The farming agreement was reached during two days of agricultural talks that wrapped up Friday in the North's city of Kaesong.
The farming talks were the first ever between the two countries. Under the pact, South Korea will provide fertilizer, pesticides and equipment to North Korea's struggling farming sector.
North Korea's socialist cooperative farms have been unable to meet the food needs of the Stalinist nation's 23-million people and will undergo modernization with the help of the South. South Korea has sent hundreds of thousands of tons of food and fertilizer aid to the North over the past several years.
