Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas told hundreds of joyous Palestinians today (Friday) that Israel's withdrawal from the Gaza Strip after a 38-year occupation is the result of their sacrifices.
He also promised his people jobs and homes and encouraged them to refrain from violence.
Mr. Abbas spoke to flag-waving supporters at Gaza's International Airport in the town of Rafah, which witnessed numerous Israeli incursions during the five-year Palestinian uprising.
His appearance at the airport was significant, as it has been closed since Israel bulldozed the runways when the uprising began. Mr. Abbas said today the airport will soon resume operation.
Mr. Abbas and his Fatah movement have been engaged in fierce competition with the militant group Hamas to be seen as the catalyst for the Gaza pullout -- which was a unilateral Israeli move.
