수십만명의 젊은 가톨릭 신도들은 교황으로서 첫 외국 방문에 나선 베네딕토 16세를 환영하기 위해 그를 기다리고 있습니다. 베네딕토 16세는 18일 오후 선박을 이용해 라인강을 따라 시의 중심가에 들어갈 것으로 예상되고 있습니다.
나흘간의 일정으로 고향 독일을 방문한 교황은 일요일에 있을 행사 마감 공개 미사를 포함해 여러 공식 행사에 참석할 예정입니다.세계 청년 대회 주최측은 지구촌 200개 나라에서 약 8십만명에 달하는 사람들이 이번 행사에 참석할 것이라고 말하고 있습니다.
교황은 또한 이번 독일 체류 기간중 한 회당을 방문해 유대교와 회교 지도자들을 만날 예정입니다. 행사 담당자는 대회 장소주변에 4천여명의 경찰이 경계를 서는등 치안상태가 철저하다고 말하고 있습니다.

Pope Benedict has begun his first foreign trip as pontiff, arriving in Cologne, Germany to lead celebrations of the Roman Catholic Church's 20th annual World Youth Day.
Addressing the crowd waiting for him at the airport, the pope said his planned meetings with Jewish and Muslim leaders in Germany will be important steps in a shared commitment to building a more just and fraternal future.
The pope broke with his predecessor's tradition and did not kiss the ground as he stepped off the plane. Pope Benedict is on a four-day visit to his native country.
Organizers say as many as 800-thousand people from some 200 nations will attend World Youth Day events.
The head of the organizing committee says security is tight, with some four-thousand police on duty.
