Israeli security forces stormed a barricaded Jewish settlement in the Gaza Strip early today (Tuesday), arresting at least 50 people protesting government orders to evacuate the territory.
The confrontation at the Neve Dekalim settlement came hours before a midnight deadline for all 85-hundred Gaza settlers to leave the territory.
Israeli television footage showed soldiers dragging away youths trying to block trucks moving in to load the belongings of settlers who had decided to leave voluntarily.
Israeli Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz said he expects at least half Gaza's settlers to leave peacefully, and repeated a warning that those who ignore today's deadline will be removed forcibly.
The three-week Israeli evacuation operation began Monday, when Israeli troops began distributing eviction notices in Gaza's 21 Jewish settlements.
Monday evening, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon described the withdrawal as a painful step -- but essential to Israel's national security.
