수단의 반군 지도자였던 존 가랑 부통령의 사망으로 촉발된 폭력 사태로 최소한 130명이 사망하고 350명 이상이 부상했습니다.
수단 적신월은 대부분의 사망자들이 수도 하르툼에서 발생했지만 남부 도시 주바와 말라칼에서도 사망자가 나왔다고 밝혔습니다.
하르툼의 상황은 4일 현재 안정된 것으로 보도되고 있습니다. 하지만 하르툼의 많은 상업 지구들에서 상점이 불타고 약탈되면서 일부 지역이 폐허로 변했습니다.
이번 폭력 사태는 가랑 부통령이 헬리콥터기 추락으로 사망했다는 소식이 전해진 1일에 시작됐습니다.
가랑 부통령은 생전에 20여년 동안 남부 반군 활동을 이끌었으며 수단 정부와 체결한 평화협정에 따라서 사망 3주 전에 부통령으로 취임했습니다.

At least 130 people have been killed and more than 350 injured in Sudan in three days of rioting following the death of Vice President John Garang.
The Sudanese Red Crescent says most of the deaths occurred in the capital, Khartoum, but says several people also died in the southern towns of Juba and Malakal.
Khartoum is reported to be calm today (Thursday). However, many of the city's commercial districts are in ruins, with shops burned and looted.
The violence began on Monday, sparked by the announcement that Mr. Garang had died in a helicopter crash. He led Sudan's southern rebel movement for more than 20 years and, three weeks before his death, was sworn in as vice president under a peace accord reached with the government.
