수단 반군 지도자 출신으로 올해 아프리카 최장기 내전을 종식하는 평화 협정에 서명했던 존 가랑 수단 부통령이 우간다 방문을 마치고 귀환하던 중 헬기 추락 사고로 사망했습니다.
오마르 엘-바쉬르 수단 대통령은 1일, 약 1달 전에 부통령에 취임했던 가랑 부통령의 사망을 확인하는 성명을 발표했습니다. 바쉬르 대통령은 자신과 가랑 부통령이 21년간 계속된 수단 내전을 종식하기 위해 7개월 전에 서명한 평화 협정의 정신에 따라 평화 과정을 계속할 것이라고 다짐했습니다.

John Garang, the Sudanese rebel leader who signed a peace agreement this year to end Africa's longest civil war, has died in a helicopter crash while returning from a trip to Uganda.
Sudanese President Omar el-Bashir issued a statement today (Monday) confirming the death of Mr. Garang, who had become Sudan's first vice president less than a month ago.
Mr. Bashir pledged to continue the peace process in Sudan in the spirirt of the accord he and Mr. Garang signed seven months ago to end the country's 21-year civil war, but violent disturbances broke out in Khartoum soon after the vice president's death was announced.
Mr. Garang was returning from a visit to Uganda when his helicopter crashed in the mountains of southern Sudan. All 14 people aboard the aircraft -- Mr. Garang and six other six Sudanese and seven Ugandan crew members -- died.
The former rebel leader had been meeting in Kampala (the Ugandan capital) with Ugandan President Moweri Museveni. He left for Sudan late Saturday aboard a helicopter from Mr. Museveni's personal fleet.
Authorities have blamed the crash on inclement weather.
