북한은 한반도에서 핵무기를 제거할 준비가 돼 있다고 26일 밝혔습니다. 북한의 이같은 언급은 이날 중국 베이징에서 13개월만에 재개된 6자회담 개막식에서 나온 것입니다.
크리스토퍼 힐 미국 수석대표는 미국은 북한을 공격할 의도가 전혀 없다고 거듭 강조했습니다. 북한은 그동안 핵무기 포기의 대가로 미국의 지원과 안전보장을 요구해 왔습니다.
북한과 미국 대표들은 이날 개막식이 끝난 뒤 별도로 만났습니다. 양쪽 대표들의 만남은 25일에 이어 두번째인데 소식통들은 북-미 간 양자접촉은 좋은 협상 분위기를 반영하는 것이라고 말했습니다.

North Korea says it is ready to work towards ridding the Korean peninsula of nuclear weapons.
The comment was made today (Tuesday) as six-party nuclear disarmament talks opened in Beijing after a break of more than a year.
Chief U.S. negotiator Christopher Hill repeated the assurance that Washington has absolutely no intention of attacking North Korea. North Korea has previously demanded aid and security guarantees from Washington in exchange for giving up its nuclear weapons.
After the opening session, North Korean and U.S. delegates met for one-on-one discussions. It was the second such session in two days. Some analysts say the separate U.S. - North Korean talks may be a sign of an improved atmosphere in the negotiations.
But that apparent thaw comes at the same time Japan continues to raise questions about North Korea's abduction of Japanese citizens decades ago. Pyongyang insists the case is closed.
