The huge AFL-CIO labor union coalition of American workers is on the brink of splitting up, as seven dissident unions threaten to quit the organization.
Four of the splinter groups are boycotting the large organization's 50th anniversary convention getting under way today (Monday) in Chicago.
The dissident unions represent one-third of the AFL-CIO's 13-million members.
The groups are threatening to pull out of the 56-union organization over the future direction of organized labor in the United States. Union membership has steadily declined for various reasons over the years, including globalization and a move away from an industrial-based economy.
The splinter groups want the AFL-CIO leadership to emphasize recruiting new members. The dissident groups also say the current leadership is more interested in spending union money to elect politicians than to represent workers.
