이라크 보안군은 능력이 향상되고 있지만 아직 자력으로 이라크를 방위할 수 있는 정도는 아니라고 미국 국방부가 보고서에서 밝혔습니다.
국방부는 21일 의회에 제출한 보고서에서 현재 이라크 내 저항세력과 테러분자들에 독자적으로 대응할 수 있는 이라크 보안병력은 적은 수에 불과하다고 말했습니다.
또 국경을 수비하는 경찰력은 손실률과 저항세력의 침투가 매우 높은 가운데 여전히 취약한 상태라고 지적했습니다.
한편 저항세력들은 20일 바그다드 서부지역에서 알제리 고위 외교관과 그의 한 측근을 납치하는 등 이슬람권 국가 외교관들에 대한 공격을 계속하고 있습니다. 이들은 이달 초 이집트 대사를 납치했으며, 바레인과 파키스탄의 외교관 납치도 시도한 바 있습니다.

The U.S. Defense Department says Iraqi security forces are improving, but are not yet ready to defend their country on their own. In a report to Congress Thursday, U.S. military commanders said only a small number of Iraqi security forces are confronting insurgents and terrorists independently.
It said border police units remain weak, with a high level of attrition and insurgent infiltration. But it gave high marks to the Iraqi army's Special Forces Brigade, which it said has taken a crucial role in major combat operations.
Meanwhile, insurgents targeted another Muslim diplomat Wednesday, seizing Algeria's top envoy and an aide in western Baghdad. Top diplomats from three other Muslim countries -- Egypt, Bahrain and Pakistan -- were separately targeted in western Baghdad earlier this month.
