인도네시아에서 지난 두 주 동안 33건의 어린이 소아마비 감염 사례가 추가로 드러남에 따라 인도네시아의 소아마비 바이러스 감염 어린이 수는 155명에 이르는 것으로 나타났습니다.
추가 감염 사례가 발생한 지역은 올해 초 이 질병이 처음 발발한 자바섬 서부 지역이라고 세계보건기구는 밝혔습니다.
이번 소아마비 감염은 인도네시아에서 10년만에 처음 발생한 것이며, 당국은 650만명의 어린이들에게 서둘러 예방백신을 접종했습니다. 인도네시아 당국은 8월30일과 9월27일 2천4백만명에 대해 추가 접종을 실시할 예정입니다.

The number of Indonesian children infected with the crippling polio virus has risen to 155, with the discovery of 33 new cases in the last two weeks.
The World Health Organization says the new infections were found in areas on western Java island, where the disease originally broke out earlier this year. The polio outbreak -- Indonesia's first in 10 years -- has prompted authorities to vaccinate 6.5 million children.
Another 24 million will be immunized in new rounds of a vaccination campaign on August 30th and September 27th. Polio is usually spread through polluted water. It affects the nervous system, causing paralysis, muscular atrophy and death.
