베트남전 미군 총사령관을 지낸 윌리엄 웨스트모어랜드 예비역 대장이 향년 91세를 일기로 사망했습니다.
유가족들은 웨스트모어랜드 장군이 18일밤 사우스캐롤라이나주에 있는 요양원에서 타계했다고 말했습니다.
미 육사 웨스트포인트 출신인 그는 제 2차 세계대전을 치르면서 고속 진급, 1964년에 삼성 장군으로 베트남전 미군 총사령관으로 부임해 1968년까지 미군을 지휘했습니다.
총사령관시절, 파병 미군숫자가 크게 늘어난 웨스트모어랜드 장군은 베트남에서 공산주의를 성공적으로 저지하고 있다고 주장했습니다.
웨스트모어랜드 장군은 “베트남전의 실패는 당시 린든 존슨 대툥령이 전쟁을 월맹, 캄보디아 그리고 라오스로 확대하지 않았기 때문”이라고 비난했습니다.

Retired General William Westmoreland, who commanded U.S. troops during the Vietnam War, has died at the age of 91.
Family members say the general died late Monday at a South Carolina nursing home.
(A graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point,) General Westmoreland quickly rose through the military ranks during World War Two. By 1964, he was a three-star general commanding troops in Vietnam, where he led U.S. forces until 1968.
The general, who oversaw a vast increase in the numbers of U.S. troops in Vietnam, insisted the effort there was successful in holding communism at bay. He blamed any failures on President Lyndon Johnson's reluctance to expand the war into North Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.
In 1982, General Westmoreland filed a 120 million dollar lawsuit against the CBS television network over a documentary that implied he had underestimated enemy troop strength in Vietnam to his superiors. The case was settled out of court.
