A leading group of nations seeking membership in an enlarged United Nations Security Council has delayed a General Assembly vote on the issue until the end of this month. The delay is due to U.N. member states' disagreements over the expansion question.
India, Germany, Brazil and Japan, which hope to gain permanent seats on the Security Council in the future, say they still hope to reach agreement with African nations on details of their two separate plans for expanding the Council, but for now the effort apparently has failed.
Both the African Union and the four Security Council hopefuls from Asia, South America and Europe -- now known collectively as the G-Four nations -- propose increasing the 15-member Council to 25 or more seats, and naming new permanent members with veto rights. But their proposals differ in key details, and they were unable to bridge those gaps during meetings on Sunday.
The G-Four states say they hope to reach agreement quickly with the 53-nation AU (and they set a foreign ministers' meeting for next week [7/25] to review the situation). Despite that optimism, the VOA U.N. correspondent says the delay that was announced late Sunday is a setback
