Authorities in Cairo say they are questioning an Egyptian-born biochemist who is suspected of helping build the bombs used in last week's terrorist attacks in London.
The 33-year-old man in custody, a resident of Britain, says he is innocent, and Egyptian authorities say he has no connection with the al-Qaida terror network. Magdy el-Nashar told investigators he was visiting Egypt from
northern England, where he received a doctorate in biochemistry earlier this year at the University of Leeds.
Investigators are looking into possible ties between Mr. el-Nashar and the four men named as the suicide bombers in the July 7 attacks on subways and a bus in London, which killed more than 54 people and injured
hundreds of others. Three of the presumed bombers lived in the city of Leeds, where Mr. el-Nashar studied.
London's top police official (Ian Blair) says investigators also are in touch with authorities in Pakistan, since three of the four suspected bombers were British-born Muslims of Pakistani descent, and one of them attended
a religious school there. The police commissioner says he expects a clear link ultimately will be established between the al-Qaida terror network and the London attacks.
Britain's leading Muslims have denounced the bombings as "utterly criminal [and] totally reprehensible," and they say the action was "absolutely un-Islamic."
